PSO launches ‘E10 Gasoline’ study in Karachi

KARACHI: Mr. Jalees Ahmed Siddiqi, Managing Director of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), on Tuesday said that the launching of the Pilot Project of ‘Ethanol-blended Gasoline’ in Karachi is yet another step in Pakistan’s quest for alternate energy resources.

Speaking to journalists following extension of ‘E10 Gasoline’ pilot project to Karachi following its successful launch by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad on August 16, 2006, Mr Jalees Siddiqi said credit for this initiative rightly belongs to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who chose PSO to facilitate this pilot project.

The project, based on a detailed feasibility study by the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan, has been initiated at PSO CoCo site at Khayaban-e-Ittehad, Defence Housing Authority.

Karachi: Jalees Ahmed Siddiqi, Managing Director and CEO, PSO, launching the Pilot Project of ‘Ethanol Blended Gasoline’ at PSO CoCo site, Khayabane-e-Ittehad, DHA, on August 29, 2006. Ethanol is a byproduct of molasses through distillation, that would not only be comparatively cheaper but also would also enhance performance of engines through lead removal.

Twenty-five identified (selected) vehicles using Ethanol-blended Gasoline will be monitored by HDIP and PSO to evaluate their performance, customer response and feedback. Besides Islamabad and Karachi, the study will also be conducted in similar fashion at Lahore, with one PSO outlet dedicated in each of these cities. Successful completion of the project will present customers with alternate fuel choices as in CNG and LPG.

Thanking Secretary Petroleum & Natural Resources, Director General Oil and Director General HDIP for their support in making the pilot project possible, Jalees Siddiqi said that it was a matter of pride for us all as Pakistanis that PSO’s transformation and turnaround under the guidance and reforms of the present government has become a popular subject of case studies by both international and national business schools and management academia of repute.

The new fuel – ten percent ethanol blended with motor gasoline – is being introduced experimentally as part of government’s strategy to promote alternate energy resources.

The pilot project will be conducted for six months, with 25 pre-identified vehicles using Ethanol-blended Gasoline in each city being monitored by the Hydrocarbon Development Institute and PSO to evaluate their performance, customer response and feedback.

Speaking at the Islamabad ceremony, the Prime Minister had described it as a landmark for energy security of the country, cleaner environment and welfare of the people. He had said that ethanol, a byproduct of molasses through distillation, would not only be comparatively cheaper but also enhance performance of the engine through lead removal. It would also benefit the farmer, who would feel attracted to grow more sugarcane and get adequate compensation.
